Engraved map depicting the entire American continent, including both North and South America, issued from the *Atlas Novus Terrarum Orbis Imperia Regna et Status Exactis (…) * by Johann Baptist Homann. The composition relates to the New World as a whole, structured according to early 18th-century European cartographic conventions.
The layout is defined by decorative richness and clarity, with a detailed delineation of coastlines, river systems, mountain ranges, colonial regions, and major settlements. Particular emphasis is placed on oceanic routes and political divisions, while some inland areas remain schematic, reflecting the geographical knowledge of the period. The engraved line, refined and precise, provides an ordered reading of the space, balancing documentary function and visual presentation.
This example represents German cartographic production of its time and belongs to the tradition of decorative cartography, constituting a significant testimony to the European representation of the Americas in the early 18th century.
