📜 Description
Original copperplate engraved map depicting the Asian continent according to the latest observations derived from Muscovite sources, published in Paris in 1747 by Georges-Louis Le Rouge under the title “L’Asie Suivant les Dern.res Observ.ons. des Moscovites”. This antique map represents the whole of Asia with particular emphasis on the updated geographic knowledge resulting from Russian explorations and scientific expeditions across Siberia and the Far East during the first half of the 18th century. The composition is structured within a broad polar projection highlighting northern Asia, Tartary, China, India, Persia, Arabia, Japan and the principal archipelagos of Southeast Asia, with detailed delineation of coastlines, inland regions, river systems and political boundaries enhanced by contemporary hand-coloring. The extensive explanatory panel engraved along the right margin integrates geographical notes and territorial references connected to the most recent discoveries and observations attributed to Russian sources, reinforcing the documentary and scientific function of the map. The decorative cartouche placed in the lower left corner, enriched with allegorical figures, fauna and exotic motifs, reflects the visual language of French Enlightenment cartography while maintaining a strong educational purpose. The engraved line appears precise and highly legible, combining scientific updating, political geography and decorative presentation. This work represents a significant testimony to the evolution of European geographic knowledge of Asia during the period of intensified Russian exploration and Enlightenment scientific cartography.
