📜 Description
Double-view topographical engraving representing the fortified towns of Aire and Lillers in the historical region of Artois. The composition is structured on two horizontal registers: the upper view titled “Aire nell’Artesia” and the lower “Lillers nell’Artesia”, each identified by a distinct ribbon cartouche placed centrally above the respective urban profile. Both views adopt an elevated panoramic perspective, allowing a comprehensive reading of the fortified perimeters and surrounding territory.

The urban structures are rendered with a clear emphasis on defensive architecture: bastioned walls, curtain systems, and fortified enclosures are distinctly outlined through a precise engraved line. The internal organization of the towns is indicated through the distribution of ecclesiastical and civil buildings, while the surrounding landscape is animated by roads, cultivated fields, and military encampments. Artillery trajectories are visible in the upper view, reinforcing the military function of the representation. The toponymy is selective and functional, focusing on key urban and territorial markers, while the terrain is described through linear hatching and ground modulation rather than conventional relief schematization.

📚 Historical-Artistic Note
Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, Cosmographer of the Republic of Venice, is one of the most authoritative figures in late 17th-century European cartography. His production extends beyond geographic mapping into the systematic depiction of fortified cities, reflecting the strategic and political significance of military architecture in the period.

This engraving belongs to a corpus dedicated to European strongholds, in which Coronelli combines cartographic rigor with a descriptive visual language derived from military surveying. Compared to contemporary representations, his work stands out for the clarity of spatial organization and the analytical rendering of fortifications, situating it among the most structured and informative examples of topographical-military engraving of the Venetian school.
