📜 Description
Original woodcut by Salvador Dalì titled “La Divina Foresta,” created in 1963 for “La Divina Commedia - Purgatorio,” the deluxe edition published by Salani and printed by Stamperia Valdonega in Verona. The composition interprets a scene from Dante’s Purgatory through a visionary and symbolic language, featuring suspended figures, intense red chromatic masses, angelic presences, and fluid forms that transform the spiritual landscape into a surreal image. The inscription on the verso, “Purgatorio Tav. 28,” identifies the plate within the editorial cycle, while copy No. 40 confirms the work’s limited deluxe edition status; the print combines literary, documentary, and collectible value within the field of 20th-century master graphic art.
📚 Historical-Artistic Note
Salvador Dalì approached “The Divine Comedy” with a highly personal visual language, merging Dantean themes with surrealist imagery and symbolic invention. The woodcut faithfully translates the atmosphere of Dalì’s original watercolor compositions, preserving their dreamlike intensity and expressive color contrasts. The Salani edition, produced in collaboration with Stamperia Valdonega of Verona, is considered one of the most significant illustrated editions of Dante published in the 20th century.
