📜 Description
Original view of the city of Macau in China, published in Leiden in 1725 by Pieter van der Aa in the work *La Galerie Agréable du Monde*. This antique print depicts the renowned Far Eastern port as seen from the sea, emphasizing the city’s strategic role as one of the principal links between European maritime trade and the Chinese market during the early modern period. The composition is arranged as a panoramic coastal view, with numerous sailing vessels engaged in commercial and harbor activities occupying the foreground, while the fortified urban skyline unfolds in the background with its buildings, towers, defensive structures, and waterfront fortifications. The engraved title *Makou, Ville de la Chine* clearly identifies the subject represented and reflects the strong European interest in the major trading centers of Asia. The view serves both a documentary and educational purpose, providing a visual account of Macau’s maritime and urban environment within the network of international trade routes of the eighteenth century. Executed in etching on paper, this antique print constitutes a significant iconographic testimony to the European presence in the Far East and to the dissemination of geographical knowledge through the great Dutch publishing enterprises of the eighteenth century.
