📜 Description
Original ornamental engraving produced in Paris in 1661 by Jean Le Pautre and published by Mariette, belonging to the great French decorative tradition of the seventeenth century. The composition presents an elaborate architectural and vegetal motif centered on an allegorical female figure placed within a symmetrical Baroque structure, surrounded by four animated putti together with rich foliate scrolls, ribbons, and ornamental volutes. The image was conceived as a decorative design model intended for the applied arts, interior architecture, cabinetmaking, and ornamental schemes, in keeping with the function of French decorative prints produced during the reign of Louis XIV. The vertical structure of the composition, articulated through luxuriant foliage and strict symmetry, emphasizes the print’s project-oriented nature, intended both for the dissemination of ornamental repertories and for the training of craftsmen and decorators. The engraved publisher’s inscription “A Paris Chez P. Mariette” confirms the official character of the edition and places the work within the celebrated Parisian production associated with the Mariette family, whose activity played a fundamental role in the European circulation of Baroque ornamental engravings. Executed in etching, the plate combines decorative function with documentary value and stands as a representative example of French ornamental culture during the second half of the seventeenth century.
📚 Historical-Artistic Note
Jean Le Pautre was one of the most influential French ornamental designers of the seventeenth century and played a central role in the development of the French Baroque decorative language. His engravings, distributed throughout Europe by specialized publishers such as the Mariette family, became essential repertories for architects, woodcarvers, cabinetmakers, and decorators. The editorial collaboration with Mariette contributed significantly to the broad circulation of his ornamental models, characterized by a synthesis of Baroque theatricality, classical symmetry, and luxuriant vegetal decoration. Today, Le Pautre’s prints remain an important primary source for the study of ornamentation during the French Grand Siècle.
