📜 Description
Important engraved plate entitled “Le Temple de Vesta et l’Arc de Janus”, published in Paris in 1877 by Félix Hermet as part of the series “Musée du Louvre (...)”. The composition depicts the Temple of Vesta and the Arch of Janus in Rome’s Forum Boarium through an archaeological landscape inspired by a model by Giovanni Paolo Panini, one of the foremost painters of Roman vedute and classical ruins of the eighteenth century. The scene is structured around monumental ancient architecture animated by figures moving among sculptural fragments, fallen stones and Corinthian columns, according to a composition that combines archaeological documentation, theatrical staging and the idealized vision of ancient Rome characteristic of the Panini tradition. The engraving is distinguished by its precise and analytical rendering of architectural details, balancing documentary clarity with refined pictorial interpretation. The inscriptions below the image identify the subject, the reference to the “École Italienne”, the connection with the Musée du Louvre, and the figures involved in the production of the plate, including Foucher as draughtsman and Daudet as engraver. Representative of nineteenth-century French antiquarian publishing, this antique print reflects the enduring European fascination with Roman archaeology and with the systematic reproduction of celebrated monuments and artworks preserved in major museum collections.
📚 Historical-Artistic Note
Giovanni Paolo Panini was among the leading interpreters of eighteenth-century Roman vedute, internationally renowned for his representations of classical ruins and monumental architecture. His works strongly influenced nineteenth-century archaeological imagery and antiquarian illustration. This plate derives from a drawing by Foucher engraved by Daudet for the Parisian publisher Félix Hermet, active in the dissemination of engraved reproductions connected to the collections of the Louvre Museum. Works of this type belong to the broader European tradition of archaeological engravings intended both for scholarly dissemination and for collectors of historical prints and architectural views.
