📜 Description
Engraved map depicting the Friuli region and the Trevigiano area, published in 1627 as part of Jodocus Hondius’ Nova et Accurata Italiae Hodiernae Descriptio. The image relates to the territorial context of north-eastern Italy, according to a compositional structure consistent with early seventeenth-century Dutch cartographic production. The graphic composition stands out for its clarity and descriptive precision, with a territorial layout highlighting towns, rivers, mountain ranges, and the principal communication routes between Friuli, the Belluno area, and the Trevigiano district. The presence of the Gulf of Venice in the lower right section contributes to defining the geographical and commercial dimension of the represented territory. The engraved line, sharp and analytical, provides an orderly reading of the landscape, balancing documentary function and formal elegance. A representative example of Dutch editorial cartography of the period, the map belongs to the tradition of descriptive and regional cartography, constituting a significant testimony to the European representation of Italian territories during the seventeenth century.
📚 Historical-Artistic Note
Jodocus Hondius ranks among the principal figures of European cartography between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, distinguished by the high quality of his engraving work and the broad circulation of his publications, often connected to the geographical tradition established by Mercator. The work belongs to the Nova et Accurata Italiae Hodiernae Descriptio, conceived as an updated cartographic description of the Italian peninsula through detailed regional maps. Examples of this type, intended both for study and geographical consultation, testify to the central role of Dutch publishing in the dissemination of European cartographic knowledge during the early modern period.
