📜 Description
17th-century allegorical and didactic engraving depicting the symbolic diagram of “Theology,” taken from “The Gentleman’s Recreation (...)” by R. Bloome and published in London in 1686 by S. Roycroft. The composition presents a complex schematic structure organized within a large central oval containing branching pathways, theological inscriptions, and conceptual connections devoted to Christian doctrine, grace, faith, charity, and the salvation of the soul. The iconographic arrangement combines encyclopedic function, educational purpose, and allegorical construction according to the emblematic visual language characteristic of late 17th-century English culture. Surrounding the principal diagram is a richly decorative frame populated by allegorical figures, floral motifs, ornamental elements, and symbolic personifications that transform the plate into a visual synthesis of religious knowledge and illustrated representation. The numerous inscriptions distributed throughout the diagrammatic structure guide the reading of the image through a conceptual progression intended to explain the moral and theological principles of Christianity. The title “THEOLOGY,” placed at the upper section of the plate, clearly identifies the function of the engraving as an instrument of religious instruction and moral reflection. The work belongs to the English editorial tradition devoted to encyclopedic repertories and illustrated compilations of scientific, technical, philosophical, and moral subjects circulated among the educated public of the late 17th century.

📚 Historical-Artistic Note
Richard Blome was one of the leading English publishers, cartographers, and compilers of the 17th century, renowned for works dedicated to geography, encyclopedic knowledge, and illustrated dissemination. “The Gentleman’s Recreation” represents a broad compilation of scientific, technical, moral, and practical subjects intended for the education of the English cultivated classes. The allegorical and diagrammatic plates included in the work reflect the 17th-century interest in the classification of knowledge and in the visual representation of philosophical and religious concepts. This engraving constitutes a significant testimony to English encyclopedic culture of the period and to the use of imagery as both a pedagogical and speculative instrument.
