📜 Description
Important original etching from the celebrated series “Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano,” published in Rome by Marco Pagliarini between 1772 and 1777, engraved by Giovanni Volpato after a design by Ludovico Teseo. The work documents one of the most renowned decorative cycles of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, translating through a rigorously architectural composition the ornamental and allegorical repertory derived from Raphael’s Vatican Loggias. The composition develops vertically through a structure articulated by figurative panels, classical decorative elements, and compartmentalized motifs rendered through a refined engraved language. The narrative focal point is formed by the central axis populated with superimposed allegorical figures, including winged personifications, putti, and symbolic globes, while the lateral sections contain mythological scenes and classical figures enclosed within geometric reserves inspired by Renaissance Vatican decoration. The plate reflects the documentary and educational purpose of the series, conceived to disseminate throughout Europe the ornamental language of the Vatican Loggias through high-quality antique prints. The decorative arrangement, strongly symmetrical and theatrical, highlights the dialogue between archaeology, classicism, and Roman Neoclassical taste during the second half of the 18th century.
📚 Historical-Artistic Note
The series “Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano” represents one of the most significant Roman publishing projects of the 18th century devoted to the dissemination of Raphael-inspired ornamentation. Giovanni Volpato, the Venetian engraver active in Rome and among the foremost interpreters of European Neoclassical engraving, collaborated with the designer Ludovico Teseo in the engraved translation of the Vatican decorations attributed to Raphael’s workshop. Marco Pagliarini’s edition belongs to the cultural climate of the Grand Tour and the rediscovery of antiquity, addressing collectors, architects, and scholars interested in classical and Renaissance decoration. The quality of the engraved line, the architectural precision, and the complexity of the iconographic program make this work an important testimony to Roman 18th-century printmaking.
